Group Lockout Coordination

Toolbox Talk:

Assigning a Group Lockout Coordinator

June 27, 2025

When multiple workers or crews are involved, a single person must oversee the group lockout process to ensure it’s done correctly and safely.

Why It Matters:

Without clear oversight, steps can be missed, locks can be forgotten, and workers may re-enter unsafe equipment. A group lockout coordinator ensures everyone is accounted for, and every step is verified before re-energizing equipment.

Key Points:

  • The group LOTO coordinator is responsible for organizing and verifying all locks.
  • They maintain the lockbox log, tracking who is locked in and out.
  • Only the coordinator can authorize the final removal of locks and re-energizing of equipment.
  • The coordinator should conduct a final sweep to confirm all work is complete before restoring power.
  • Must be experienced in lockout/tagout and understand the equipment and hazards involved.

✅ A clear leader prevents confusion and keeps everyone safe.

Ask the Crew:

  • Who is our LOTO coordinator today?
  • Do we all know the sign-in and sign-out procedure?
