A rescue plan is only effective if everyone knows their role.
Don’t wait for an emergency to figure out who does what.
Why It Matters
In the event of a fall, seconds count — and confusion can cost a life.
If no one knows who’s supposed to initiate the rescue, retrieve gear, or call EMS, the situation becomes chaotic.
Clear roles lead to faster rescues and safer outcomes for everyone on-site.
Key Points
- Before starting work at height, every crew should review:
- Who initiates the rescue
- Who retrieves the rescue equipment
- Who contacts emergency services
- These roles must be assigned at the start of each shift
- Rotate roles regularly to ensure everyone is trained and confident
- Brief new crew members or visitors on the plan before they enter a fall-risk area
- Document assignments as part of your daily safety huddle or PTP
✅ Don’t guess during an emergency. Know your role ahead of time.
Core Rescue Roles You Must Assign
✅ Assign These Roles:
- Rescue Lead — Person trained and designated to direct and initiate rescue
- Rescue Kit Retriever — Responsible for locating and delivering equipment to the scene
- EMS Contact — Knows the address, access point, and nearest medical provider
- Backup/Spotter — Assists the rescue lead and manages the area
- Crew Notifier — Keeps others out of danger zones and communicates instructions
🚫 Never Assume:
- Someone else will step in during an emergency
- Everyone automatically knows who’s in charge
- You’ll “figure it out if it happens”
Ask the Crew
- Who is assigned as our Rescue Lead today?
- Who is responsible for contacting EMS?
- Have we reviewed and confirmed all rescue roles this week?
